Challenge
The Munich Fire Department deployment presented a unique combination of structural, environmental, and automation challenges. Given its role as a critical public safety infrastructure asset, the system demanded absolute operational reliability under extreme stress.
-
Severe Environmental Exposure over 18.1 Meters: Operating as an outdoor wall-mounted installation in Munich, the lift is subjected to freezing winter temperatures, snow, and rain. The 18.1-meter structural frame (F120 profile) and 20A drive chains had to be engineered to prevent ice buildup and moisture-induced corrosion, which would otherwise lead to mechanical failure.
-
High-Velocity Emergency Throughput: To meet the rapid deployment cycles of a municipal fire department, the lift required a vertical speed of
≥≥
30 m/min. Managing this high-speed vertical transition with a 1,000 kg payload requires a high-performance high-speed vertical conveyor system that executes smooth deceleration curves to protect fragile breathing apparatus from shock loads.
-
Structural Anchoring without a Brick Shaft: The system was installed directly against the exterior building wall (via an outdoor pit of 2500x2200mm) without a masonry shaft. Guiding a 1-ton cab smoothly over 18.1 meters requires exceptionally rigid vertical tracking. The design relied on heavy-duty T90 guide rails for the cab and TA5A rails for the counterweight to prevent any lateral twisting or swaying.
-
Tight Spatial Tolerances at Window Interfaces: The straight-through entry/exit required the platform to align precisely with window openings of only 1800mm in width. With a cab width of 1500mm, the structural clearance was minimal, demanding millimetric leveling accuracy to prevent collision with the concrete building facade during high-speed approaches.
-
Automation and Conveyor Integration: To enable rapid, hands-free loading of standard 1000x1200mm equipment pallets, the system required the synchronization of dual-chain conveyors . The internal cab conveyor (1.8m x 1.5m) had to coordinate perfectly with the external buffer conveyors (1.5m x 1.5m) at each of the five floor levels.
-
Safety Fail-Safes for Emergency Personnel: As the equipment is operated by emergency responders during high-pressure scenarios, the control architecture required a redundant, intuitive interface complying with EN ISO 13849-1 safety-related control systems to prevent accidental operation while doors are unlatched.
Solution
To address the operational demands and climate challenges of the Munich facility, the engineering team designed a highly optimized SL-1000-RVC-5S (5-Stop) vertical reciprocating conveyor. The solution prioritizes high-speed stability, winterized mechanical design, and full conveyor automation.
1. High-Speed Counterweight Traction System with T90/TA5A Guidance
To achieve a lifting speed of ≥≥
30 m/min over an 18.1-meter stroke, the system employs a synchronized chain-driven counterweight traction mechanism utilizing a 20A industrial chain. The lift cabin is guided by high-rigidity T90 cold-drawn guide rails, while the counterweight is stabilized by TA5A rails. This dual-guide configuration prevents lateral sway during high-speed transitions, ensuring that the 1,800mm x 1,500mm x 2,200mm cabin maintains perfect vertical alignment even when wind loads act on the outdoor shaft. The drive is powered by a high-efficiency vertical hoist motor incorporating SEW-EURODRIVE drive technology to manage acceleration curves smoothly.
2. Automated Dual-Chain Conveyor and Level-Door Linkage
Palletized rescue equipment (1000mm x 1200mm) is handled hands-free through a highly coordinated automated conveyor integration system. The lift cabin features an internal dual-chain conveyor (1.8m x 1.5m), which interfaces with external buffer chain conveyors (1.5m x 1.5m) installed at the ground station and upper floors. The system features high-speed PVC roll-up doors (2600mm x 3000mm) at the building facade windows. These doors are electronically interlocked with the lift’s PLC: when the cabin achieves perfect leveling, the roll-up doors and the dual-chain conveyors activate in sequence to execute a straight-through cargo transfer.
3. Winterized F120 Frame and 500mm Pit Sealing
To withstand Munich’s harsh winter conditions, the structural skeleton was built using heavy-gauge F120 H-beams with J100 x 50 x 4mm connections, treated with a marine-grade anti-corrosive polyurethane coating in classic industrial blue. The outdoor pit, excavated to a depth of 500 mm, features a specialized water-diversion and drainage seal to prevent water accumulation and freezing around the bottom limit buffers. All 20A chains and drive gears utilize low-temperature synthetic lubricants, maintaining consistent viscosity and preventing mechanical binding down to -25°C.
4. PLC-Based Safety Redundancy and Anti-Fall Protection
The control system is driven by a centralized Siemens PLC, monitored via a 10-inch industrial touchscreen HMI with a multi-color signal stack light at each landing. For critical safety, the carriage is fitted with a specialized mechanical anti-fall leveling device and standard safety gears. If the system detects a slack chain or unexpected downward velocity, the mechanical locks instantly grip the T90 rails, arresting the load. High-precision photoelectric sensors monitor the cargo position to prevent transfer operations if a pallet is misaligned.
