This newly deployed 10-ton Double-Deck Scissor Lift has been custom-designed by our team to revolutionize bulk material transfer at a logistics terminal in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Our client, operating a busy import-export consolidation warehouse near the Port of Colombo, faced a severe logistics bottleneck. They needed to move heavy palletized cargo weighing up to 10 metric tons between a subterranean storage pit and the main shipping dock floor.

Moving such immense weight using standard single-platform lifts resulted in severe operational delays, as workers could only process one cargo level at a time. To dramatically increase their throughput, our engineering team developed a specialized double-deck platform configuration. This allows the warehouse operators to load and unload cargo on the upper and lower decks simultaneously, doubling their handling capacity while maintaining complete structural stability under high-tonnage loads.

The entire structural, electrical, and hydraulic design was calculated and manufactured to comply strictly with European EN 1570-1  safety requirements.

Challenge & Solution

Challenge

Lifting 10 metric tons of cargo spread across a dual-platform framework requires extreme rigidity. Unlike standard single-platform designs, our double-deck system experiences complex compound bending and torsional forces when forklifts load the platforms at different levels. To ensure the fixed scissor lift platform [https://gradin-lifts.com/product-category/fixed-scissor-lifts/] can withstand these asymmetrical loading forces, we engineered the main scissor linkages using heavy-wall 250×150×8 mm high-strength rectangular steel tubing.

The structural chassis of both platforms and the bottom frame were built using heavy-duty 20# channel steel, providing massive bending resistance. For the second layer (the upper deck), we incorporated a high-rigidity grid of 160×80×4 mm rectangular steel tubes under a solid 4mm checkered steel deck plate.

Additionally, we designed the entire scissor arm structure to have a maximum width of under 2.0 meters. This specific dimension allowed us to pre-assemble and test the machine in our factory before packing it directly into a standard 40-foot shipping container, saving the client expensive on-site welding and assembly costs in Colombo.

Solution

The mechanical lifting force is generated by a heavy-duty, low-noise 7.5 kW hydraulic power unit coupled to dual high-capacity cylinders with a Φ140−Φ100 mm bore-to-rod ratio and Φ22 mm heavy-walled high-pressure hoses. Since the entire lift must retract completely below floor level, pit integration was a critical design phase. The self-height of the platform is designed at 635 mm(25″), which retracts into a 3,454.5 mm (136″) deep concrete pit, aligning the upper deck perfectly flush with the warehouse floor when fully lowered.

To meet the client’s strict facility guidelines, we applied a customized, high-durability “Medium Bronze” powder-coated finish (matching RAL 8014 / RAL 8019 standards) to prevent corrosion from the high tropical humidity of Colombo.

The electrical control panel is equipped with comprehensive phase-loss and overload protection, engineered to match the regional 230V, 60Hz single-phase electrical grid. The hydraulic line is protected by integrated pipeline safety lock-valves, complying with ISO 12100  machinery safety requirements.
