In-Ground Hydraulic Truck Leveler: Proven 30-Ton Lift

Project Overview

A high-volume paper packaging and corrugated board manufacturing plant required a specialized heavy-duty unloading solution inside a flat, ground-level warehouse facility. The facility lacked elevated loading docks (no 1.2-meter dock platforms), forcing workers to unload cargo freight trucks manually or deploy hazardous, steep mobile yard ramps. Incoming freight consists of heavy 2-axle and 3-axle stake-bed trucks carrying palletized corrugated sheets weighing up to 30,000 kg gross vehicle weight. The plant required an in-floor elevator capable of sinking the entire truck into a pit until the rear bed rests flush with the warehouse slab.

  • Country/Region: East Asia Industrial Packaging & Paper Manufacturing Hub

  • Client Facility: High-Capacity Corrugated Packaging & Paperboard Logistics Depot

  • Equipment Model: Gradin Custom In-Ground Hydraulic Truck Leveler (Model: G-HTL-30T-12M)

  • Industry Classification: Advanced Manufacturing

  • Rated Dynamic Payload: 30,000 kg (30.0 Metric Tons gross vehicle dynamic rating)

  • Platform Dimensions: 12,000 mm (L) x 3,500 mm (W) heavy-duty drive-on platform

  • Lowering & Elevation Travel: 1,400 mm vertical stroke from flush floor entry down to sunken truck bed alignment

  • Installation Footprint: Deep Recessed Concrete Pit Installation integrated into the warehouse slab

  • Throughput Cadence: 20+ full-size freight trucks processed per 12-hour operational shift

To eliminate yard ramp bottlenecks and enable horizontal material transfer, the Gradin engineering team engineered a high-tonnage Flush-Floor Truck Unloading Lift. The system features a Multi-Cylinder Tandem Scissor Assembly supporting an ultra-rigid Heavy-Duty I-Beam Reinforced Deck. The equipment was manufactured in strict compliance with the EN 1570-1 Safety Standard for heavy industrial lift tables . Factory logistics directors integrated this Gradin truck leveler alongside our portfolio of custom heavy-duty vehicle scissor lifts  to establish direct ground-level forklift dockless unloading.

Challenge & Solution

Challenge

Lowering and supporting a fully loaded 30-ton freight truck inside a warehouse pit to achieve level floor alignment presented severe structural, point-load, and hydraulic holding challenges:

  • Massive Dynamic Point Loads from Truck Wheels and Forklifts: When a 30-ton loaded truck drives onto the deck, concentrated dual-tire axle loads generate severe localized flexure. Once lowered, heavy electric forklifts carrying 2-ton paper rolls drive across the rear truck bed threshold. The platform requires an engineered 30-Ton Dynamic Wheel Load Capacity backed by dense structural beams to prevent deck dish-warping.

  • Micro-Level Floor Flush Alignment Across Varying Truck Chassis: Truck bed heights vary between 1,000 mm and 1,400 mm depending on suspension air pressure and tire wear. The In-Ground Hydraulic Truck Leveler must lower to the exact millimeter coordinate to ensure Direct Drive-On Forklift Loading without height steps that damage forklift tires or snag pallet jacks.

  • Torsional Deflection Along a 12-Meter Longitudinal Span: Driving an asymmetrical cargo truck onto a 12,000 mm long platform induces intense diagonal twisting moments. The Multi-Cylinder Tandem Scissor Assembly must maintain structural rigidity under dynamic rolling moments to prevent scissor racking and roller binding.

  • Zero Hydraulic Drift Under Prolonged Forklift Operations: Unloading 30 tons of corrugated sheets takes up to 45 minutes of continuous forklift shuttle runs. Any internal hydraulic valve leakage causes the truck to sink, breaking alignment with the warehouse floor. The hydraulic manifold requires a Zero-Drift Hydraulic Holding Valve to maintain zero-millimeter drift during unloading.

  • Deep Pit Shear Hazards and Concrete Edge Protection: Sinking a 12m truck below floor level creates deep perimeter shear voids between the truck body and concrete pit walls. The installation requires structural pit corner steel edging, optical infrared perimeter curtains, and mechanical maintenance safety props.

  • Contaminated Pit Fluid Drainage and Environmental Resistance: Industrial wash water, oil drips, and mud from truck tires accumulate inside the concrete pit. The chassis requires hot-dip galvanizing, marine epoxy primers, and submersible float drainage pumps to maintain operational integrity.

Solution

The Gradin engineering team engineered an ultra-rugged in-floor hydraulic truck lowering elevator combining heavy I-beam framing, tandem scissor kinematics, and closed-loop proportional hydraulics:

  • Heavy-Duty I-Beam Reinforced Deck & Q355B Box Scissor Arms: The 12,000 mm x 3,500 mm platform is built with a Heavy-Duty I-Beam Reinforced Deck utilizing 250 mm structural I-beams topped with an 8.0 mm heavy diamond-tread steel plate. The scissor mechanism uses heavy Q355B structural box steel arms with induction-hardened alloy pivot pins, easily absorbing 30-Ton Dynamic Wheel Load Capacity without structural dish-warping.

  • Multi-Cylinder Tandem Scissor Actuation: The vertical kinematic assembly employs a Multi-Cylinder Tandem Scissor Assembly powered by four heavy-bore Phi 140/100 honed hydraulic cylinders. Equipped with rotary gear flow dividers, the system ensures uniform longitudinal ascent and descent at a controlled speed of 2.0 to 3.5 m/min.

  • Zero-Drift Hard-Seated Hydraulic Holding Manifold: The central hydraulic power unit integrates a Zero-Drift Hydraulic Holding Valve assembly with pilot-operated check valves and cylinder port velocity fuses. The system locks the lowered truck bed solidly at warehouse floor level, maintaining zero micro-drift during 45 minutes of continuous forklift shuttle loading.

  • Recessed Concrete Pit Integration with Reinforced Edge Angles: The system is engineered for a Recessed Concrete Pit Installation, resting flush with the plant slab in its elevated state to allow drive-over traffic, and lowering smoothly to transform the truck bed into a Flush-Floor Truck Unloading Lift.

  • Direct Drive-On Forklift Loading Efficiency: By aligning the truck bed coplanar with the warehouse floor, electric forklifts and manual pallet jacks execute Direct Drive-On Forklift Loading in and out of the stake bed, cutting turnaround times from 120 minutes down to under 20 minutes per truck.

  • Siemens Smart PLC Automation and EN 1570-1 Compliance: Controlled via a Siemens S7-1200 PLC cabinet with dual wired pendants and wireless remotes, the In-Ground Hydraulic Truck Leveler incorporates anti-pinch edge switches, over-travel limit sensors, and an emergency manual gravity lowering bypass in full compliance with the EN 1570-1 Safety Standard.
