1.7-Ton L-Type 90° Hydraulic Roll Tilter | Italy

Project Overview

“This project details the installation of our custom L-Type Hydraulic Upender (1.7T) in Bologna, Italy, designed to tilt heavy packaging rolls safely.”
The client for this project is a premium packaging roll and plastic film manufacturer based in Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy—a world-renowned hub for packaging machinery. Their production line required the continuous 90-degree upending of heavy rolls and cylinders (weighing up to 1,700 kg)  to transition them safely between horizontal “eye-to-side” and vertical “eye-to-the-sky” orientations for downstream packaging .
To eliminate edge damage caused by traditional crane lifting slings, we customized and delivered a 1.7-ton L-Type 90° Hydraulic Roll Tilter System [83]. The core project highlights include:

  1. Integrated 160° V-Groove Stablizer: The 1,600×1,200mm horizontal deck features an integrated V-groove (V-cradle) measuring 200mm wide and 1,600mm long with a 160∘ angle. This custom geometry automatically centers and stabilizes the cylindrical rolls, preventing any lateral slipping or axial movement during the tilt cycle.

  2. Pit-Mounted Flush-to-Floor Integration: To facilitate manual hand pallet jack  loading and seamless AGV interfacing, the tilter is engineered for pit-mounted installation, bringing the platform deck flush with the concrete floor while minimizing the system’s structural profile.

  3. European Standard 400V 3-Phase Powertrain: Equipped with a 3.0 kW / 400V / 50Hz 3-phase hydraulic power unit [83] that matches Italy’s industrial grid codes. It is driven by heavy-duty dual hydraulic cylinders (ϕ80−60)  to achieve vibration-free, smooth 90° tilting.

  4. Ergonomic 5-Meter Pendant Controller: Both the electrical enclosure and the handheld pendant controller are integrated with robust mounting bases, with the control cord extended to 5 meters [83] to ensure that operators can control the 1.7-ton load from a safe distance

Challenge & Solution

Challenge

Before deploying our hydraulic upender, the Italian client’s roll packaging line suffered from severe quality, safety, and logistical bottlenecks:

  1. Roll Edge Deformations Causing High Scrap Costs: Previously, operators used overhead cranes with textile slings to manually upend the 1.7-ton foil/paper rolls in mid-air. This rough handling often crushed the delicate roll edges, causing a 2.3% edge deformation rate. In high-speed packaging, this resulted in approximately €14,000  in monthly material scrap and rework losses.

  2. Suspended Crane Upending Creating Severe Safety Risks: Manually upending a 1.7-ton cylindrical load using cranes and pry bars required 3 operators to stabilize the load, presenting high risks of cargo slips and crushing injuries, which violated European occupational health and safety directives.

  3. Floor-Level Height Barriers Preventing Manual Shuttling: After tilting, the rolls must be pushed directly into the packaging line. Any elevation lip exceeding 50mm makes it physically impossible for an operator to push a 1.7-ton pallet manually. The tilter had to be pit-mounted flush , but managing dust ingress and structural sealing under a low-profile deck was a difficult engineering task.

  4. Hydraulic Pressure Drop and Inertial Vibrations: Cylindrical rolls exert an eccentric torque. As the deck passes the 45-degree angle, the center of gravity shifts forward. If standard hydraulic valves suffered from micro-leakage, the platform would judder, crushing the internal paper cores or causing the rolls to unspool.

  5. Strict CE Machinery Directive Regulatory Barriers: Italian regulatory boards demand high safety factors. The cylinders required integrated non-return valves to prevent collapse during hose breaches, alongside dual mechanical limit switches, without which the machinery could not obtain CE safety certification.

Solution

To overcome these delicate roll-handling constraints and satisfy rigorous European safety laws, we customized and delivered a high-precision, low-profile hydraulic upending solution:

  1. 160° V-Groove Cradle and Friction-Free Rubber Padding:

    • Precision-Machined V-Cradle: The horizontal deck is engineered with a 160∘

V-groove measuring 200mm wide and 1,600mm long . This optimally cradles cylindrical rolls with diameters ranging from 600mm to 1200mm, preventing any radial rolling.

    • Anti-Friction Protective Layer: The L-shaped deck is fully lined with high-density, anti-stretch rubber padding, preventing the structural steel plates from directly contacting and pinching the roll core. This engineering design successfully reduced active product edge damage from 2.3% to 0%, saving €14,000 monthly in scrap losses.

  2. Pit-Mounted Shallow Profile for Flush-to-Floor Transition:

    • The upender base is engineered with an extremely low-profile height. By installing the unit inside a shallow concrete pit, the platform deck aligns at a flush 0mm elevation relative to the factory floor . This flat interface allows operators to push a 1,700 kg roll onto the platform smoothly using a standard manual hand pallet jack.

  3. High-Torque 3-Phase Powertrain & Proportional Flow Control:

    • Powered by a European-standard 3.0 kW / 400V / 50Hz 3-phase hydraulic unit , the VRC uses dual high-pressure cylinders (ϕ80−60)  to maintain constant torque across the 90° stroke . Proportional flow control valves prevent sudden hydraulic lunges as the center of gravity shifts past 45 degrees, securing smooth, steady travel and preventing any unspooling of the roll.

  4. 5-Meter Pedestal Pendant & Redundant Limit Switches:

    • The electrical panel is fully grounded on its own metal pedestal base, while the pendant controller line is extended to 5 meters  on a pedestal . This allows the operator to control the upending cycle from a safe clearing zone.

    • Dual-Safety Overrun Limits: The vertical stroke is regulated by dual mechanical limit switches (with extra spare switches provided)  to prevent cylinder over-travel, satisfying CE machinery directives for redundant safety loops.

  5. Cylinder-Integrated Burst Safety Valves & Wear-Resistant Hose:

    • Each cylinder is fitted with a direct-acting hydraulic burst safety valve . In the event of a sudden rupture in the heavy-duty Φ22mmhigh-pressure hoses , the valve closes instantly to lock the fluid column, preventing the 1.7-ton platform from crashing down [77]. This design is fully compliant with EN ISO 13849-1 Machinery Safety Standards
