This newly engineered 10-ton Mechanical Rollover Upender has been custom-built by our team to synchronize twin cradle platforms for aerospace defense testing. Our client, a national defense research laboratory under CASIC, required an exceptionally precise, synchronized method to rotate heavy structural aerospace components.

These components such as cylindrical rocket booster stages, defensive missile casings, and large radar arrays must be tilted 90 degrees from a horizontal transportation position to a vertical experimental testing alignment. Because of the extreme length and fragile nature of these structures, any angular misalignment during rotation would cause severe bending stress, potentially damaging the high-value test prototypes.

To solve this, we bypassed conventional hydraulic upenders and engineered a highly reliable mechanical twin cradle rolling solution driven by a single motor with a physical coupling shaft. This custom system delivers 100% mechanical synchronization and can be explored in our main catalog of upenders and tilters .

Challenge & Solution

Challenge

The primary structural challenge of this national defense project was guaranteeing absolute synchronization across a massive 7-meter span. While electrical synchronization of separate motors can experience lag, we resolved this by designing a single-motor mechanical coupling drive.

A high-torque, industrial-grade gearmotor is positioned centrally between the two 10-ton upenders. It connects to both platforms simultaneously through a heavy-duty, multi-section mechanical coupling shaft. This physical connection ensures that rotative torque is divided equally, allowing both platforms to roll smoothly in perfect synchronization with zero phase error.

Furthermore, we engineered the drive system to offer maximum field flexibility. If the laboratory needs to perform testing on smaller, localized components, technicians can easily unbolt and remove the coupling shaft on one side of the motor. This instantly decouples the twin upenders, allowing either unit to operate as an independent, standalone 10-ton flipper.

This dual-mode mechanical flexibility is crucial for high-efficiency, multi-purpose R&D laboratory workflows.

Solution

To withstand the extreme dynamic twisting forces generated by 10-ton military and aerospace structures, our welding technicians implemented a reinforced welding process. The L-shaped cradle frames are constructed using thick, structural steel channels (J160805 mm) and high-density 18mm steel rib plates underneath to prevent any warping or welding fatigue under dynamic loads. To assist with laboratory transport, we integrated heavy-duty forklift slots and crane lifting eyes directly into the bottom base frames.

The electrical automation is engineered with an external 3-phase 4-wire control cabinet fitted with premium Delixi electrical components, designed to operate in cleanroom environments with neat, tray-routed signal wiring. The system features redundant safety layers, including an integrated emergency stop pendant and an overcurrent protection device that automatically cuts power to the motor if the load exceeds 10,000 kg.

We also designed a comprehensive 1,200mm high grid-style safety fence measuring 4,000 mm×1,700 mmaround the entire perimeter. The gate is equipped with an electro-mechanical interlock that instantly shuts down all motor power if the gate is opened during a flip, conforming directly with European EN 1570-1 safety requirements.
