This custom-engineered Single-Side Freight Lift has been deployed by our engineering team to maximize vertical material flow inside a highly restricted concrete hoistway in Hiroshima, Japan. Our importing partner, a well-known Japanese distributor of material handling and warehouse lifting machinery, required a heavy-duty, space-saving cargo elevator for their end-user’s distribution facility in Fukuyama City.

The installation site featured an extremely tight, pre-existing concrete shaft measuring only 1,940 mm×1,760 mm in clear space. To fit a standard vertical reciprocating conveyor  inside such a narrow footprint, traditional dual-sided guide rail structures were impossible, as they would severely reduce the usable platform width.

To overcome this, we designed a single-sided cantilevered lift mechanism where both heavy 100H steel guide rails and the hydraulic cylinder are mounted on a single side wall. This leaves the remaining three sides completely free, maximizing the usable deck size to 1,800 mm×1,400 mmwithin the tight hoistway. The entire mechanical and structural safety package was certified in accordance with ISO 12100 safety standards .

Challenge & Solution

Challenge

The secondary major engineering challenge of this Japanese project was satisfying strict limits on pit depth and containerized shipping volume:

  • 50mm Ultra-Shallow Pit Integration: The end-user’s concrete floor could not be deeply excavated due to subterranean foundation constraints. Standard hydraulic freight elevators often require pit depths of 300mm to 500mm. We optimized our bottom chassis framework to have a closed profile of zero above-floor height, requiring a concrete pit depth of only 50 mm (2 inches) to achieve a perfectly flush floor transition.

  • Container Shipping Volume Reduction: To minimize high ocean freight rates, the Japanese distributor required us to pack this complete, 4.6-meter travel platform alongside another machine inside a single, standard 20GP shipping container. We resolved this by fabricating the 100H guide rails in modular 3.8-meter segments that bolt together securely on-site, allowing the entire gantry structure to be packed flat without expensive wooden crating.

  • Complete Level 1 Safety Mesh Enclosure: To prevent warehouse workers from accidentally contacting the moving lift carriage, we engineered a modular diamond steel wire mesh enclosure around the ground floor (1F) hoistway boundaries, standing 3,700 mm high. The front enclosure features a 1,900 mm wide,

2,400 mm high frame designed to integrate seamlessly with the client's automated rolling shutter doors.

Solution

Mechanical thrust is generated by a heavy-duty, low-noise 4.0 kW hydraulic pump station paired with a single, high-capacity Φ70−50 mm cylinder. The lifting gantry (J160804 mm steel) is driven vertically by dual heavy LH1244 leaf chains. To prevent catastrophic failure, the platform is suspended by two redundant, high-tensile 12# safety anti-drop steel wire ropes (Φ12 mm).

Because Fukuyama City operates on a unique 3-phase, 200V AC, 60Hz power grid, we engineered the electrical control system and motor windings specifically to match these Japanese grid requirements. The electrical controls operate on a low-voltage 24V safety loop, featuring two separate wired pendant controllers for both landings.

To maximize structural longevity in Japan’s highly humid seaside environment, we sandblasted all raw steel components before applying an ultra-durable, wear-resistant powder coating in RAL 6018 Yellow-Green. This finish prevents oxidation and maintains an attractive industrial appearance.

Prior to container loading, we pre-assembled and tested the entire single-sided lift in our factory courtyard, welding the J100504 mm lift frame directly to the platform checker plate to ensure a highly rigid, shake-free transit.
