Vehicle Scissor Lift Special Chassis Case Study: 2-Ton

Project Overview

We designed and manufactured a highly integrated batch of custom scissor elevator modules for a special-purpose machine manufacturer, engineered to mount directly onto a mobile chassis frame. To achieve a compact profile under strict space constraints, our team eliminated the standard on-board motor and hydraulic power unit (HPU), tapping instead directly into the host vehicle’s central hydraulic system. The cargo container features a dual-door design, flush lifting points, and an asymmetrical stepped layout.

Challenge & Solution

Challenge

Mounting a heavy cargo elevator directly onto a dynamic, moving special-purpose vehicle chassis presented our engineering team with unique spatial and fluid-power challenges. Standard static scissor lifts utilize an onboard hydraulic power unit (HPU) and electric motor, but this host vehicle had zero available payload space and no high-current electrical bus for a motor. I had to design a completely passive mechanical scissor system that tapped into the host vehicle’s existing central hydraulic loop while maintaining strict structural stability during high-speed transit. We had to ensure compliance with the fluid safety guidelines of ISO 4413.

  • Eliminating Onboard Power Units (No Onboard Power): We were strictly forbidden from including an onboard electric motor or hydraulic pump station due to vehicle space limits. I had to configure this Special Vehicle Integrated Scissor Lift as an External Hydraulic PTO Powered Lift, requiring our hydraulic lines to match the specific pressure and volumetric flow rate of the vehicle’s central PTO pump.

  • Restricted Closed Height Constraints (Closed Profile): The host vehicle required a maximum closed height of only 605 mm to prevent top-heaviness during highway transit. Packing two heavy-duty double-acting cylinders, a robust structural frame, and the Vehicle-Mounted Cargo Lift Box within this tight vertical profile without structural interference required precise CAD volumetric mapping.

  • Dynamic Road Torsional Stresses (Chassis Torsion): During high-speed off-road vehicle transit, the chassis bends and twists. If our Chassis Mounted Scissor Platform was too rigid, these torsional stresses would shear our mounting bolts; if it was too flexible, the scissor alignment would fail under a 2-ton load.

  • Off-Center Structural Loads (Off-Center Load): Loading heavy machinery through the side doors of the cargo box shifts the vehicle’s center of gravity immediately. This uneven weight concentrates massive bending moments on the scissor arms, risking severe structural deflection or premature failure of the pivot joints.

Solution

To overcome the severe spatial limitations and vehicle chassis twisting forces, our non-standard engineering team designed a passive, highly integrated lifting module. We completely removed the HPU, linking the hydraulic lines directly to the truck’s central engine-driven PTO loop while reinforcing the base using clamping bolts to eliminate chassis welding. Built for heavy-duty military-grade transit, our structural welding procedures were executed and qualified to meet the strict guidelines of ISO 15614-1.

  • External Hydraulic PTO Integration: We designed this Special Vehicle Integrated Scissor Lift without an internal motor, utilizing an External Hydraulic PTO Powered Lift configuration. The hydraulic interface features dual M18x1.5 straight thread ports connecting directly to the truck’s PTO line.

  • Double-Acting Hydraulic Scissor Lift Configuration: We equipped the platform with two heavy-duty cylinders (110 mm outer cylinder diameter, 90 mm piston rod diameter) featuring integrated hydraulic balancing valves, providing precise bidirectional fluid flow control and preventing platform descent drift during vehicle transit.

  • Q345 Rectangular Tube Scissor Arms: To absorb extreme dynamic road torsion, we constructed the scissor arms from 160 mm x 80 mm x 5 mm Q345 Rectangular Tube Scissor Arms, ensuring a high yield strength of Q345 steel while minimizing dead weight.

  • HB280-320 Quenched Scissor Pins: We specified 40 mm diameter 40Cr pivot pins, heat-treated and tempered to achieve HB280-320 Quenched Scissor Pins, completely isolating concentrated shear forces and ensuring no joint gap expansion under 2-ton off-center loads.

  • Anti-Vibration Base Clamping: We fabricated a high-rigidity structural steel base frame and supplied 6 customized high-tensile U-bolts to secure the Chassis Mounted Scissor Platform to the chassis frame, absorbing road-vibration and protecting the vehicle frame.

  • Demountable Vehicle Safety Guardrails & Stepped Cargo Box: The deck features a 1100 mm high set of Demountable Vehicle Safety Guardrails surrounding the Vehicle-Mounted Cargo Lift Box, utilizing internal door locks and flush lifting points to optimize spatial envelope mapping.
